Bergendy  Cooke

In 2008, after 10 years living and working in Europe and North America, Bergendy Cooke set up a practice in her native New Zealand.  She brought with her experience garnered from world renowned practices such as the Pritzker Prize winning, Zaha Hadid Architects, Adjaye Associates in London and Peter Marino Architects in New York.

Currently based in Barcelona, with a team in New Zealand, the practice continues to work on projects around the world. Bergendy has an inherent passion for art and projects are perceived not just as buildings but also as inhabited sculptures that endure.

The practice works to create refreshing, innovative and refined solutions through a rigorous process incorporating site, client’s brief and an investigation of materials that are chosen for their durability and timelessness.

Bergendy creates works that are a unique reply to their location and culture, inspired by history and local vernacular, forming a contemporary architectural response.

Essential to each project is a foundation of ongoing investigation of feasibility, economy, sustainability and most importantly,  strong client collaboration. Simultaneously we maintain commitment to beauty in the built form, resulting in unique spatial experiences that are inherently practical.

Our Studio is a unique  boutique practice working with select clients. This allows for full attention to all aspects of the project right down to the smallest details.

The practice has experience in many parts of the world and in many built sectors - from small to large scale spaces for living, hotels, exhibition, multi-storey, retail, renovation and interior design, to pieces of furniture and art.

Our work has received numerous awards worldwide, from HOME magazine’s ‘Home of the year’ in NZ 2021 to most recently, Dezeen’s 2024 ‘Hospitality project of the year’, Architzer’s 2024 ‘Hotels and resorts category’ winner and Archello’s 2023  ‘Hotel building of the year’ - all for Maison Brummell in Marrakesh
